If anyone dares to break the following ordinances, we order him to leave the army and face his just punishment. The supervisor in charge of the strait must impose a fine of 50 pounds of gold on him if he has broken any of the regulations established by our Piety. Because we want him to keep a constant watch over all parts [of the Hellespont] so that no criminal escapes. We recommend that these regulations be published on the spot and engraved on stone columns, erected on the shore, so that tax collectors and taxpayers can read this law and the former will refrain from avariciousness and the latter will be confident that they will not be wronged, while the venerable supervisor in charge of the strait, when he constantly faces these letters as a threat can expect the reality of a punishment when he has slackened.☩ ☩ The usual taxes that the captains have paid over the past 20 or 22 years, as the venerable regulator of the city has determined after investigation for the benefit of our Piety – theese and only these duties will continue to be paid from today on, namely:
