- In the First Punic War the site of a battle between the Roman consul Regulus and the Carthaginians(Polybius calls the site Adys)note
- One of the last settlements of Carthage before its demise in the Third Punic War.
- Conquered by Rome in 146 BCE.
- Augustus: settlement (colonia) for veterans of XIII Gemina. Capitol temple from the first century.
- Many splendid buildings: amphitheater (age of Hadrian), baths (three identified), house of the Laberii (second century, mosaics early fourth century).
- Bishop in the age of Tertullian
- In late Antiquity, many ancient buildings (e.g., the Capitol) reused for olive oil presses
