Lambaesis

Lambaesis

• 

  Lambaesis was already occupied (in 81 CE?) by a subunit or an auxilary unit, but became a huge military settlement when the emperor Hadrian transferred the Third Legion Augusta to this place. This must have happened in c.125 CE.
• Hadrian visited the fortress in the early summer of 128. An inscription records his speech.
• Veterans were settled in Cuicul, Sitifis, and Thamugadi.
• Several monuments in the neighborhood: amphitheater, arch of Commodus
• In the third century, III Augusta was temporarily disbanded (from 238 to 253). Perhaps, a (sub)unit of VII Gemina took over.
• Byzantine fort
• Sanctuary: Capitol and temple of Asclepius
